Role Overview
As a Senior Strategic Database Migration Engineer (Level III), you will lead the architectural design and execution of high-stakes database migrations from Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) to Google Cloud Platform (GCP). While the primary mission is a large-scale Oracle migration, you will serve as a multi-stack technical authority, managing and migrating diverse database workloads including PostgreSQL, MySQL, and SQL Server. You will ensure data integrity, minimal downtime, and high-performance architecture across the entire GCP data portfolio.
🟠 Primary Responsibilities
1. Migration Strategy & Leadership
Architectural Design: Lead the discovery and analysis of complex, heterogeneous database environments on OCI. Design end-to-end migration paths for Oracle, SQL Server, and Open Source engines to GCP targets (Cloud SQL, AlloyDB, or Spanner).
Strategic Planning: Create comprehensive migration playbooks, including cutover strategies, rollback plans, and risk mitigation for multi-engine, multi-terabyte datasets.
Stakeholder Management: Act as the technical lead in meetings with executive leaders, justifying architectural choices for both relational and NoSQL modernization.
2. Technical Execution & Optimization
Multi-Engine Expertise: Manage and tune a variety of source databases including Oracle (12c-19c), PostgreSQL, MySQL, and SQL Server to ensure they are migration-ready.
GCP Deployment & Modernization: Design and deploy target environments on GCP. This includes migrating legacy SQL Server workloads to Cloud SQL, or modernizing Oracle/Postgres workloads to AlloyDB.
Heterogeneous Data Movement: Utilize advanced migration tools like GCP Database Migration Service (DMS), Oracle GoldenGate, Striim, or custom ETL pipelines to ensure seamless data flow across different engine types.
NoSQL Integration: Oversee the migration and optimization of NoSQL workloads (e.g., MongoDB or Cassandra) to Bigtable or Firestore.
3. Automation & Infrastructure
Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Standardize multi-engine database provisioning using Terraform and Ansible.
Performance Engineering: Conduct deep-dive performance tuning post-migration to ensure cross-engine workloads meet or exceed OCI performance benchmarks.
4. Security, Compliance & DR
Secure Transition: Implement encryption and IAM policies on GCP that align with enterprise security standards for diverse database fleets.
Disaster Recovery: Design and validate DR strategies, including cross-region replication and point-in-time recovery for all managed engines.
